New York- the gateway to the United States

New York, the third most populous State in the US, is located in the northeastern part of the country and has common border with Canada. Historically, it is known as the gateway to the United States for immigrants and today it is a major financial, cultural, manufacturing and transportation center.

About geography of the city

In contrast to the urban atmosphere of New York City, the major part of the state is full of farms, forests, mountains, rivers and lakes. The main geographic features of the State include the Great Appalachian Valley in eastern New York, with Lake Champlain being the main northern feature of the valley, including the Hudson River flowing to the Atlantic Ocean. On the west side of the valley lie the rugged Adirondack Mountains. The southern part of the state is located on the Allegheny plateau, rising from the Catskill Mountains. Allegheny River and other rivers of Susquehanna and Delaware systems drain the western part of the state. The borders of New York touch Lake Erie an Lake Ontario, the two Great Lakes, which are joined by the Niagra river.

Some popular tourists destinations

Some of the most popular tourist destinations providing scenic beauty at its best in the State are Niagara Falls, Lake Tear of the Clouds, Adirondack Park, Catskill Park, Long Island beaches, Hudson river valley, Finger Lakes, Montauk Point State Park, which is famous for housing the Montauk Lighthouse that was commissioned by George Washington, the first President of the United States. There is so much to see in the New York State that it is hard to think of this place as one tourist destination.

Apart from New York City, which is the most populous city of the State and the US, there are other cities that attract a lot of tourists every year to this region, like Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, etc. New York City is the most sought after tourist destination in the world. The beauty of New York City is unparalleled having numerous monuments and historical places drawing tourist to the city from across the globe. A tourist can not miss the Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Manhattan, Wall Street, Times Square, Central Park, Broadway, Rockefeller Center, Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Museum, Bronx International Wildlife Park, etc.

Sherrill is the smallest city of New York with Albany being its capital. New York City is located at the southern end of the State. New York City along with its suburb areas and northern part of New Jersey form the central core of the megalopolis, stretching from Boston to Washington, sometimes known as Bo swash.

The transport system in the entire state, especially in New York City is extensive. Apart from the famous mass transit subway of New York City, there are a number of commuter railroad systems entering and leaving the city. The city is served by three main airports, John F Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark International Airport with flights to most of the major domestic and international destinations.
